Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures, offering comprehensive solutions for women dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts. This procedure is often chosen due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, or incomplete breast development.

Through breast augmentation, smaller breasts become larger, fuller, and more aesthetically appealing. This is achieved by placing silicone implants, referred to as prostheses, beneath the breast tissue to enhance volume. Breast surgeries are widely popular worldwide as they not only improve physical appearance but also significantly boost patients’ self-confidence.

Reasons for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is typically performed for the following reasons:

  • Dissatisfaction with breast size: Small or underdeveloped breasts can negatively impact body image and self-confidence.
  • Imbalance between hips and breasts: Breast augmentation can create more harmonious proportions.
  • Changes after pregnancy or weight loss: Shrinking, sagging, or asymmetrical breasts can be corrected.
  • Breast asymmetry: Surgery can address differences in size or shape between the breasts.

Suitable Age for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is generally recommended after the age of 18, once breast development is complete. For healthy patients, the procedure can also be performed on women over 50. In exceptional cases, such as significant asymmetry during adolescence, the surgery can be done earlier with parental consent.

Types of Breast Implants

There are two main types of breast implants:

  • Round Implants: Provide uniform volume and a fuller appearance.
  • Teardrop Implants: Mimic the natural breast shape and are preferred for patients with minimal breast tissue.

The choice of implant depends on the patient’s body structure, measurements, and preferences. During surgery, the selected implant is tested, and the surgeon decides which one delivers the best results.

Preparing for Surgery

Before undergoing breast augmentation, the following precautions should be taken:

  • Smoking and alcohol consumption: Should be discontinued at least two weeks before the surgery.
  • Medication use: Blood-thinning medications like aspirin should be stopped 24 hours before surgery.
  • Examinations: Women under 40 should have an ultrasound, and those over 40 should undergo a mammogram.
  • Food and drink: Avoid consuming solid or liquid food eight hours before surgery.

Anesthesia and Duration of Surgery

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a sterile hospital environment and typically lasts 1 to 3 hours. After the procedure, dressings are applied, and special bras help reduce swelling and aid in healing. Patients can usually stand up within a few hours and are discharged the following day.

Recovery Process After Breast Augmentation

  • Pain: Mild pain is easily managed with medication and usually subsides within 1-2 days.
  • Scars: Surgical scars fade over 6 months to a year.
  • Swelling: Minor swelling resolves within a few days.
  • Return to daily life: Showering is possible after 3-5 days, and most women can return to work within a week.

Important Post-Surgery Guidelines

  • Physical activities: Avoid intense physical exertion and sports for 6-8 weeks.
  • Special bras: A sports bra should be worn for at least one month.
  • Sun protection: Protect scars from direct sunlight with sunscreen or tape for 4-6 weeks to prevent darkening.
  • Follow-up care: Regular check-ups with the doctor are essential to monitor healing.

Breast augmentation is a safe and effective procedure performed by experienced plastic surgeons. It not only enhances physical appearance but also significantly improves self-confidence and quality of life for patients.
